Santos and Santos *
Three brothers: Mike, Fernie, and Tomas, work as defense attourneys at Santos & Santos in 80’s El Paso, Texas. Following the story of the youngest brother, Tomas, he learns that blood is thicker than water and nothing is above the family. His struggle between justice and family is depicted throughout the design for the show, the color story emphasizes the different groups and sides of the conflict. We see Tomas shift from blue to red throughout the show, highlighting his allegiance to the different sides.
For this production of Santos & Santos, I want to tell the story of the three wealthy brothers, their family, and their struggle against the legal system (Judge Benton and Gonzales). The story takes place in 1980s El Paso, Beaumont, Dallas, San Antonio, and Las Vegas, so I seek to replicate this timeframe through somewhat period-accurate design. While this story’s heroes are morally ambiguous and much of what we see operates in shades of grey, I want the colors and textures of the costumes to represent the moral struggle we see many of the characters go through. Utilizing different color palettes, I want to create a clear divide between each of the factions in this play (Santos & Family in sandy tones and reds; Willis family in more grey and black; Judge & Gonzales in more purple and blue tones).
I also would like to create a sense of connection between certain characters like Tomas and Vickie through color and texture, but also emphasizing character foils between characters like Tomas and Judge Benton. Since this play puts much emphasis on interconnected relationships and family ties, I want the costumes to continue this idea and put emphasis on the same things.
